Indonesia is taking bold steps to solidify its role within BRICS, as Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir met with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting (FMM) in Johannesburg, South Africa.
During their discussion, Nasir expressed gratitude to Brazil for its unwavering support of Indonesia’s BRICS membership, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to being an active and engaged participant in the organization.
"As a new BRICS member, Indonesia is committed to actively contributing to all BRICS agendas and initiatives," Nasir emphasized.
Indonesia also sought Brazil’s backing for ASEAN’s invitation to the upcoming G20 Summit in South Africa, reinforcing the importance of regional representation on the global stage.
Stronger BRICS Collaboration and Future Engagements
Foreign Minister Vieira extended a warm invitation to President Prabowo Subianto to attend the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro in July 2025, highlighting the potential to strengthen Indonesia’s influence within the alliance.
Beyond BRICS, the two ministers explored bilateral cooperation, particularly in food security, and agreed to develop a more comprehensive bilateral cooperation roadmap. Indonesia also called for Brazil’s support in expediting negotiations on the Indonesia-Mercosur Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IM-CEPA) to enhance economic collaboration.

A Call for a More Inclusive Global Order
Addressing broader global issues, both countries underscored the need for multilateral reforms, advocating for a more inclusive and representative global system that reflects modern geopolitical realities.
"Indonesia believes that stronger cooperation among Global South nations is crucial in ensuring a fairer international order," Nasir stated.
The G20 FMM, which aimed to evaluate the bloc’s 20-year journey and address pressing geopolitical challenges, also saw Indonesia engage in discussions with MIKTA nations (Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey, and Australia), reinforcing the role of emerging powers in shaping global governance.
With Indonesia’s growing presence in BRICS and its proactive diplomatic efforts, the country is positioning itself as a key player in global economic and political affairs.
