On October 26, 2025, Timor-Leste celebrated a defining moment in its national journey as it officially became the 11th member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The streets of Dili were filled with excitement and national pride as thousands of citizens, including representatives from government institutions, NGOs, INGOs, students, and community groups, gathered along the route from Nicolau Lobato International Airport to the Presidential Palace in Aitarak Laran. They came together to welcome Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão and President José Ramos-Horta upon their return from the ASEAN Summit.

Timor-Leste’s ASEAN membership marks the culmination of a long-standing aspiration that began shortly after the nation’s independence in 2002. The country first applied for ASEAN membership in 2011 and was granted admission in principle in 2022. Its formal inclusion in 2025 represents ASEAN’s first expansion since the 1990s, symbolizing regional solidarity and the bloc’s commitment to inclusivity.
Becoming part of ASEAN opens the door for Timor-Leste to engage more deeply in regional trade, investment, education, and digital economy cooperation. While the country still faces economic and institutional challenges compared to other member states, ASEAN membership provides a platform for greater integration and long-term development.

For many Timorese, this milestone is not only a diplomatic achievement but also a moment of profound national pride. As Prime Minister Gusmão expressed, “For the people of Timor-Leste, this is not only a dream realized but a powerful affirmation of our journey — one marked by resilience, determination, and hope.”

The journey of integration is just beginning. Timor-Leste will continue aligning its laws, systems, and infrastructure with ASEAN standards, supported by its regional partners. The historic accession reaffirms the nation’s growing role in shaping Southeast Asia’s shared future and its commitment to peace, cooperation, and sustainable development.
